Meet Lena. She is a character from my work in progress Lena- Awakened.
When I think about what’s happened in the last six months I can’t believe it. But here I am in this dark locker-room. Where people have done the unthinkable.
“Who gonna do this?” Says a squeaky teenage boy’s voice.
”I am!” I shout out.
“I don’t hear you!”
That guy you hear is my buddy Kiki.
“Yeah that’s right! You are!” He says.
I need to focus. Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Breath out.
Alone I start the walk. More like a procession through darkness. Guided only by the sounds of the cheering crowd. I emerge into a world few have access to.
“Ladies and gentlemen! Are you ready to see the impossible?” Echoes a deep man’s voice over a microphone.
“Fight, fight, fight!” Chants the raging crowd.
I look up and see women wearing Valentino gowns stomp the floor. Men in their Armani suits pound the tables. Their bottles of Taste of Diamond champagne sit next to caviar appetizers. Welcome to Cage Club. Where waiters take your cocktail order along with your fighting bets.
I walk towards the cage, a fighting ring. Kiki is waiting for me. He too has his game face on. He holds the ropes down for me to climb in to the ring. Across the ring is a huge Ape like man pounding his chest and screaming. I turn to face Kiki. I get on my knees and Kiki hands me my purple jade rosary. I pray,
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
When I get up I catch a glimpse of Zack.
He’s standing at the center of the box seats. His hair is slicked back. His skin has a golden tan. His eyes meet mine. His athletic body makes his Armani suit look good. I despise him. He knows I will deliver. After all he has my family hostage.
“Ding, ding, ding, ding,” echoes the bell in the fighting cage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, get your bets on. This is about to begin.” The deep voice echoes.
Then there is a rush of energy and an invisible fence is created making the fighting ring a three story tall cage.
“In the yellow corner we have Chumchum the Great with fifteen kills!” The crowd goes wild. The ape-man bangs his chest and yells.
“In the red corner we have Lena in her first official fight.” The crowd stomps and yells. I look at them and feel anger. These pricks are God’s children too.
“Ding, ding, ding! Fighters in your position.”
There’s no referee in this match. It’s just this ape-man and me. How did I get here?
